• Case study – Cantilever seat

From a sketch drawn in the office one day, we created this double cantilevered cast concrete bench with a spread of 2.3 m in each direction it creates quite spectacular impression.

A post system was designed with a ground anchor passing through at the correct depth to counterbalance the heavy load placed on it by the two benches.

A full reinforced bar frame was created inside a shuttered plywood box. The design was based on a car seat with lumbar support and raised leg support. This shutter was created in two parts. The base of the seat being the first part cast with rebar left exposed before the top of the seat was exposed shuttered and poured. Once all the shuttering was taken off it took three men two days to polish and expose the aggregate to the satisfaction of our designer. The concrete used our own blend of stones and white cement and is quite literally unique. We have access to a wide range of concrete mixes and we are also able to use highly decorative cement finishes from in many colours and effects.

The block concrete in the corner is an essential addition to the design as it helps stabilise the design and it is a very successful cocktail table.

Once all the shuttering was stripped off unbreakable mirrors fitted around the ground post to reflect the lights fitted to the underside of the seat. When lit at night, the post literally cannot be seen giving the effect of the bench floating. During the day the effect is almost as impressive!

Every garden that is designed should benefit from something spectacular. If you would like us to create similar a statement piece contact Kevin to discuss anything challenging.
