• Case study roofs

Trafalgar Terrace

This was a slate roof renewal in a conservation area, incorporating flat roof renewal. The time taken to complete project was seven days.

Nelson Road, Harrow on the Hill

Working closely with the architect, LBR was instrumental in designing this completely bespoke roof, in a very tight location. A piece of glass weighing over 400kg over, was to be suspended, without means of visible support, between an existing parapet wall and a newly constructed lead roof.

Ventilation regulations, requiring all lead to be continuously ventilated, caused many challenges. With the glass being higher than the lead roof and very little room, due to planning constraints, for a back gutter arrangement. Great planning and thought was needed.

Using Nicholson products and a good deal of ingenuity, we produced this premium roof, in a limited time, on a heavily restrained budget

West Street

This charming little cottage required a new roof. The team from LBR were able to submit planning, carry out the works on the job and complete within one week. The slate we used was the Del Carmen, our favourite slate for so many reasons. Whilst carrying out the re-roof, we upgraded the Velux window, roof insulation and renovated the chimney.

Wellington Terrace – Harrow on the Hill

Some years ago LBR completely rebuilt the side of this house. We were called back to carry out the slate roof renewal, to the highest standard. Like so much of our work, the property resides in a conservation area and we handled the planning application for the client.

Due to awkwardness of access and the impact on the neighbours, the roof was planned intricately and carried out over a nine-day period, including erection and dismantling of the scaffold. If you require a similar project carried out quickly, planning is key, so talk to one of our team today.

West Street

This is currently a work in progress. We were first approached by the owner in 2014, with the possibility of converting this lovely cottage, from its post-war flat roof, to a more traditional pitched roof finish, with slate and lead detail. After recommending an architect to carry out the planning application, drawings and working closely with the Party Wall surveyor, the works started in late 2015. The job is quite extensive for such a small roof, as it includes carefully removing the existing flat roof, causing as little damage to the internal structure as possible. We will then be creating a hip ended cut roof from timber on site, which discharges into a bespoke lead gutter onto site.

We have also had to source reclaim bricks, to raise the height of the parapet roof and construct a parapet wall along the flank elevation.

As experts in Victorian and Edwardian exterior renovation, our skill in producing an authentic roof from nothing, cannot be matched locally. It should be noted that this project, from start to finish, once work starts, is less than four weeks, causing minimum impact to our client, considering the nature of the building works.

Crown Street

We carried out a complete structural overhaul of this roof and the installation of conservation Velux windows. The overhaul included strengthening of all roof timbers, insulation and slating of the entire roof, with Del Carmen first quality slates. We then renewed the ridge tiles with reclaimed tiles. This roof also required the rebuilding of both gables, introducing a subtle corbel detail to both gables. We were instructed to fully rebuild an existing chimney and completely overhaul the other two remaining chimneys, introducing renewed lead work, flaunching and reclaimed chimney pots in the process. Not wishing to retain the line of the renewed roof, we also designed and had manufactured wooden chimney caps, which were covered in lead to provide a true Victorian touch. At the perimeter we installed our premium seamless aluminium guttering system, by Mustang,in a classic Victorian ogee profile.

Byron Hill Road

This roof renewal was carried out in two parts; as a flat roof and also a tiny pitched roof that needed replacement. Using a full Icopal system to the flat roof, we ensured exceptionally long life for the client and as registered installers, we are able to provide a 20 year guarantee from the manufacturer. For the main roof, a replica reclaim tile was used and the whole roof renewal was completed, with the installation of the premium seamless aluminium Mustang gutter system. The roof installation was completed in just under two weeks, causing minimum disruption.

Lycee Francais – South Kensington

At this school we carried out a refurbishment of its buildings and LBR were selected, as an approved Icopal installer, to carry out the roof. We installed a Firesmart 20 year guaranteed warm roof. The warm roof, requires installation to be mounted above the constructed flat roof, which means that no cross ventilation below the deck is required. Working in conjunction with the main contractor, we were able to install the system, which was over 120 m², within a very tight timeframe. As approved installers for many products, we are happy to work for both private clients, commercial clients and main contractors. Please contact the office if you would like further information

High Street- Harrow on the Hill

We carried out a full slate roof replacement, including a new flat roof on this imposing building and including renewing all relevant lead work. We also provided a roof terrace, with slabs, on a special roof support system.

Sudbury Hill – Harrow on the Hill

We were instructed to carry out this roof renewal, reusing as many of the slates as possible. This made matching replacements particularly difficult, due to the weathering that had taken place on the existing slates. The slate roof had been renewed sometime within the last 30 years, but had not been carried out very well and there were lots of problems. LBR were able to retain approximately a third of the roof tiles and sourced the remaining two thirds, so that they will eventually blend in with the retained slates. Whilst working on the roof, we renovated two of the enormous chimneys on top of this magnificent property. These were in a terrible condition and the one on the rear was splitting dangerously. Using a highly experienced workforce, LBR were able to carry out emergency repairs to make the chimney safe, before undertaking the rebuilding of the chimney, in reclaim bricks, using a mix of bricks we had managed to save and reclaim bricks. Once we had completed the roof works, the fascia boards were replaced with new timber, which was painted before fitting our premium seamless aluminium gutter system.
